"Today has seen the publication of Clinical Trials in the United Kingdom from the Department of Health, a report providing an overview of progress being made by the UK and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in England to make the UK a premier destination for clinical trials."
"This report demonstrates that patients in the UK are in a good position within Europe for opportunities to take part in clinical research, which benefits their health outcomes and provides income for the NHS. Our own research supports this, showing that the UK is the top country in Europe for phase 1 clinical trials, is snapping at the heels of Germany for phase 2 clinical trials, and is third behind Germany and Spain for phase 3 clinical trials.
"This is good news for UK patients as the findings from clinical research provide vital evidence needed for new medicines to be licensed. Clinical trials help to provide wider access to the latest medicines for patients across the NHS, and improve patient care by changing how we might treat certain diseases. We look forward to continuing our work with partners in the Department of Health and the NHS to make the UK the best place in the world to develop new medicines for patients."
